Those of you who follow our social media, or receive our e-newsletter, may remember that I am a fan of aging in place (the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably). In fact, my siblings and I helped my parents age in place, which improved the quality of their lives and overall happiness.
Before deciding on aging in place, in addition to your family, you should consult with several trusted professionals to make sure your needs and preferences are looked after. For example:
- Your Doctor will assess overall health, manage chronic conditions, and provide guidance on medical needs and lifestyle adjustments.
- Your Lawyer to address legal matters such as estate planning, power of attorney, etc.
- Your Financial Advisor to help plan for the financial aspects of aging in place, including budgeting for home modifications, and healthcare costs not covered by the Government.
- An Occupational Therapist to evaluate your home environment and suggest modifications or adaptive equipment to enhance safety and independence.
- A Physiotherapist to evaluate your mobility and physical capabilities, and recommend exercises or modifications to maintain strength and prevent falls.
- Your Renovator to make your home accessible and safe as you age. They can help with practical changes like installing grab bars or ramps.
- A Social Worker to assist with planning for social needs, connecting with community resources, and navigating services available for seniors.
Consulting these professionals will help you create a well-rounded plan that addresses medical, practical, financial, and emotional aspects of aging in place.
