We often take our knees for granted. However, thanks to our knees, we can perform various movements. Unfortunately, the knee is also prone to pain, injury, and many forms of arthritis. Thankfully, there are ways to minimize the impact of knee problems.
Here are some things you can do to have healthy knees.
- Get moving! Regular physical activity can relieve pain and stiffness, strengthen muscles, and improve balance to decrease the risk of falls and injuries to the knees and other joints.
- Maintain a healthy weight. Excess pounds put additional stress on your knees. This additional stress can increase cartilage wear and pain.
- Protect your knees from injury. Be mindful of activities that put stress on the knees. If you experience any pain in your joints, get some rest.
- Treat injuries promptly. If you injure a knee or other joint, practice RICE (rest, ice, compression, and elevation):
- Rest your knees and avoid any activities that cause pain
- Place a cold pack or ice wrapped in a towel on the injured knee for 20 minutes several times a day
- Wrap and secure an elastic bandage around the injured knee to reduce swelling
- Recline with your leg propped up on a pillow to keep your knee elevated above your heart as often as you can
For other tips on keeping your knees healthy, research online or consult your doctor. Take care of yourselves and each other.
