Lately, our temperatures have been up and down like a yo-yo. When the weather heats up, staying hydrated is essential. That means not only drinking enough water, but also eating water-rich foods and recognizing the signs of dehydration.
Hot weather increases fluid loss through sweating, so keep a water bottle with you and sip regularly throughout the day instead of waiting until you feel thirsty.
Did you know that about 20% of your daily fluid intake comes from food? During a heatwave, choose water-rich options such as:
- Watermelon
- Strawberries
- Cucumbers
- Lettuce
- Bell peppers
- Tomatoes
- Oranges
- Yogurt
- Broth-based soups
Watch for signs of dehydration, including:
- Thirst
- Dry mouth, lips, or tongue
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Urinating less than usual
- Dark yellow or strong-smelling urine
By drinking water regularly and eating foods with a high-water content, you’ll stay better hydrated, feel your best, and enjoy the summer more safely.
