Ever eat something only for your stomach to feel a bit off? You might have a sensitive stomach.
A sensitive stomach occurs because of stomach infection, food intolerance, indigestion, or a long-term condition such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Common symptoms of a sensitive stomach include stomach discomfort and bloating. While there isn’t a cure for a sensitive stomach, there are ways it can be managed.
Going on a bland diet might help with stomach sensitivity. A bland diet consists of foods that are easy to digest and low in fibre. Some examples of bland foods include:
- Broth
- Cooked vegetables, such as spinach or carrots
- Low-fat dairy products
- Lean meat, such as skinless chicken or fish
- Tofu
- Eggs
- Cream of wheat
- Puddings
- Fruit juices
Spicy, fried, or acidic foods may trigger stomach sensitivities; staying hydrated can help relieve any symptoms.
Despite the discomfort, sensitive stomachs usually aren’t a major cause for concern. However, if you have persistent or worsening symptoms such as blood in your stool, you should see a doctor.
You can effectively manage your sensitive stomach by eating bland foods, avoiding trigger foods, and staying hydrated.
Treat your stomach kindly, and it will usually return the favour.
