I love walking my dog, especially in the spring. The weather is warmer, birds are out, and flowers are in bloom. However, with spring flowers come rain showers. While the rain can put a damper on your afternoon walk, research has shown that there are benefits to walking in the rain — whether you have a dog or not.
Scientists have discovered that you burn more calories when you walk in the rain compared to when it’s dry outside. The reason behind this is that the rain motivates you to walk quicker than normal.
Another benefit to walking in the rain is that the air is cleaner. The water from the rain washes away impurities and pollutants in the air. The air after the rain also contains less dust and allergens.
Walking in the rain also creates a sense of achievement. It’s not always enjoyable to walk when it’s raining, but once you finish, you’ll feel amazing! After all, not everyone can say they’ve (willingly) gone for a walk in the rain.
While walking in the rain can be damp and icky, it doesn’t have to be. So, the next time it rains, grab your umbrella, waterproof raincoat and boots and head outside. Your lungs will thank you for the literal breath of fresh air. Take care of yourselves, puppies and each other.
