When I was growing up, I loved the winter — playing hockey, making snowmen, snowball fights with my siblings and neighbours, Christmas holidays and snow days (when school was cancelled). Believe it or not, I even enjoyed driving in the winter!

As I have gotten older, my enthusiasm for the cold has waned. I even noticed that we only have nine hours of daylight. So, to embrace winter more cheerfully, I have come up with the following hacks that seem to work for me.

  • Get Outside: Despite the cold, I try to spend time outdoors. Short walks in daylight seem to life my spirits and provide me with much-needed vitamin D.
  • Dress for the Season: I wear practical winter gear. When it’s chilly, proper clothing (like warm layers and waterproof gear) make a big difference.
  • Focus on the Positive: When I am not working, I enjoy simple pleasures like cozying up with a hot drink, watching movies, reading, or looking at old family pictures.
  • Try Various Hot Drinks: I experiment with different teas, hot chocolates, and other cozy drinks to brighten my day.
  • Eat Seasonally: I eat winter foods like root vegetables, hearty soups, and baked goods. We are lucky to have so many farms in the area. I take advantage of seasonal ingredients and enjoy the comforts of winter meals.

By making small changes and embracing winter’s coziness, I enjoy the season even if it’s no longer my favourite.
