You might think your kids are more active in the summer, but according to Western University the opposite is true! Activity drops by over 50%, and screen time increases significantly.
When kids are inactive, they miss out on benefits like:
- Better mood and sleep
- Stronger bones and muscles
- Improved focus and learning
- More emotional stability
As a parent, I agree with Western’s activity guidelines:
- 60 minutes of active play (running, biking, sports)
- lighter movement throughout the day (walking, chores, stretching)
Please try the following screen-free activities and send me your feedback:
- Family nature walks
- Sprinklers and water play
- Dance-offs in the living room
- Chalk obstacle courses
I also recommend you to join in; kids are more likely to be active when parents are too.
Don’t forget safety in the heat and consider:
- Play early or after dinner to avoid peak heat
- Choose shaded parks
- Keep water and sunscreen handy.
- Watch for signs of heat exhaustion or poor air quality.
Stay involved. Active kids today grow into healthier adults tomorrow.
