You might think your kids are more active in the summer, but according to Western University the opposite is true! Activity drops by over 50%, and screen time increases significantly.

When kids are inactive, they miss out on benefits like:

  • Better mood and sleep
  • Stronger bones and muscles
  • Improved focus and learning
  • More emotional stability

As a parent, I agree with Western’s activity guidelines:

  • 60 minutes of active play (running, biking, sports)
  • lighter movement throughout the day (walking, chores, stretching)

Please try the following screen-free activities and send me your feedback:

  • Family nature walks
  • Sprinklers and water play
  • Dance-offs in the living room
  • Chalk obstacle courses

I also recommend you to join in; kids are more likely to be active when parents are too.

Don’t forget safety in the heat and consider:

  • Play early or after dinner to avoid peak heat
  • Choose shaded parks
  • Keep water and sunscreen handy.
  • Watch for signs of heat exhaustion or poor air quality.

Stay involved. Active kids today grow into healthier adults tomorrow.
