Growing up, my parents, siblings and I had various collections like figurines, stamps, coins, spoons and dolls. Even to this day, I maintain a collection or two. Not only because I am a sentimentalist but also because I’ve found that collecting makes me feel good.
For one thing, collecting reduces stress levels and cultivates relaxation. Activities such as looking for, cataloging, and arranging items require focused attention. When we immerse ourselves in these tasks, we enter a state of deep concentration.
Collecting also encourages strategic thinking. For example, when I see a new coin, I have to decide whether to purchase it or wait until another commemorative one is issued. Furthermore, adult collectors also develop digital literacy as they navigate websites, catalogues, and chat with fellow collectors in online communities.
In the end, collecting isn’t about what you gather—it’s about the focus, joy, and connections you build along the way. I have a brother-in-law who has mastered it.
