Peter drinking hot tea

The older I get, the less coffee I drink. Instead, I drink tea and sometimes even hot water! Did you know tea is the second most-consumed beverage in the world? Water is first, of course.

According to WebMD, the habit of drinking hot tea may support relaxation and mental wellbeing. Tea contains naturally occurring compounds that have been studied for their antioxidant properties.

Growing up, I saw my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles drink tea; it can be a gentle, caffeine-containing alternative to coffee. But it’s important to let hot tea cool before drinking, especially for frequent tea drinkers.

It’s also important to be mindful of additives like sugar or cream, which can change its overall health impact. Herbal teas vary widely — ingredients may interact with medications or health conditions, so check with your doctor or pharmacist.

Hot tea in moderation is a low-risk beverage that can support hydration and wellbeing — just watch how hot and how sweet!
