Growing up, sports were a big part of my life. They allowed me to burn off some of my excess energy. They also taught me lessons in sportsmanship, fair play, how to win graciously and lose with dignity. My kids also have participated in sports over the years including hockey, soccer, volleyball, archery, curling, baseball and tennis.

A few years ago, as a family, we found a sport that we could all enjoy: Pickleball. It is quickly becoming one of the most popular racquet sports, bringing various generations together. It is an enjoyable activity for those racquet sport veterans as well as those who have never picked up a paddle. The rules are simple to follow so anyone can learn quickly. The court is set up like a badminton court. There is a left and right serve area and no overhand serves are permitted. There is a two-bounce rule: the ball must bounce once after the serve and once after the return. This eliminates any advantage from the serve and lengthens rallies. After this, the player may volley (hit the ball from the air without letting it land). There is a 7-foot area that extends from the net (called the kitchen) where no volleys are allowed. The kitchen prevents my kids from spiking a ball down my throat — for which I am thankful.

Its also a sport that can be economical for players. Our city has free outdoor courts, and a set of paddles and balls are well within most people’s budgets.

While our family outings can get competitive, and there may be some trash talking involved (mostly from me; the kids let their play do the talking), it’s a great and fun social outing that allows us to be active and to connect as a family. It’s also a great conversation starter — I am surprised by how many people I know have played or play. And for those who have never played, once they try it, most are hooked.

So, get in the ’swing’ of things and try pickleball! Take care of yourselves and each other.
