My family and I like to eat out on special occasions. When we do, the server asks whether we prefer still or sparkling water. Usually, I just go for my usual glass of still water, but occasionally I’ll change things up and have a glass of sparkling water.

In case you’re wondering, sparkling water is carbonated water. You add carbon dioxide to filtered water which makes carbonated water. Unlike the pop you find in the aisles at grocery stores, sparkling water does not contain sweeteners, artificial or natural.

Does this mean that there are health benefits to drinking sparkling water? Some studies suggest it can improve swallowing ability. One common concern people have regarding drinking carbonated beverages is that it can affect teeth, as the enamel is directly exposed to acid. However, choosing to drink carbonated water over artificially sweetened drinks is always better for your health.

Overall, no research suggests that sparkling water is inherently bad for you. So the next time you go out to eat, why not have a glass of sparkling water?
