On September 9th, we celebrate World First Aid Day! To commemorate this day, we’ve put together a guide to creating a first-aid kit for older adults. Having a first-aid kit as an older adult not only helps you prepare for emergencies, but it also helps support independence.
When building a first-aid kit for older adults, it’s important to include all the essentials plus a few extra items. A standard first-aid kit includes the following:
- Bandages
- Antiseptic wipes
- Adhesive tape
- Tweezers
- Thermometer
- Scissors
For an older adult first aid kit, customize extra items based on your needs and health concerns. For example, if you’re worried about falling, include fall injury supplies such as instant cold packs, elastic bandages, and splints.
Some additional pain relief basics that are good to have on hand include gauze pads, antibiotic ointment, non-stick dressings, and medical gloves. This way, you will be prepared for potential muscle pain, insect bites, or minor burns. You can also include a list of medications and a pill organizer in case of medical emergencies.
Older adults are particularly vulnerable during emergencies. By preparing a first-aid kit tailored to your needs, you’ll have what you need in case of an emergency!
