Have you ever heard of bentonite clay? It’s a natural clay that has a fine, soft texture that forms a paste when mixed with water. I first heard of this clay because it’s found in lots of skincare products. It inspired me to do some digging, and I found that there are benefits to bentonite clay.
Bentonite clay is most commonly found in skincare products such as face masks because of its absorbent qualities. The clay may help reduce oiliness in the skin by removing sebum from the skin’s surface and also have a calming effect on acne breakouts.
Bentonite can also be a supplement. Since bentonite is an absorbent clay, it may also alleviate virus-related digestive issues such as diarrhea. One study found that an absorbent clay called diosmectite helped stop rotavirus, a virus that causes severe diarrhea, from replicating. However, it’s recommended that you speak with a healthcare professional before consuming clay to treat diarrhea.
While bentonite clay’s absorbent qualities can’t be denied, more research needs to be done on its benefits. There are also some concerns bentonite may contain heavy metal contamination. Before using bentonite clay, consult a doctor to make sure it is safe for you.
