Whether they verbalize it or not, everyone who walks into our pharmacy expects us to help them feel better. On August 3rd—National Watermelon Day—I like to recommend something simple, sweet, and surprisingly beneficial: watermelon. Here in Ontario, August marks the peak of watermelon season, and trust me, there’s no better time to enjoy this juicy fruit fresh from the field.
Watermelon isn’t just a summer staple—it’s a hydration powerhouse. Composed of about 92% water, it’s one of nature’s most effective ways to beat the heat. We often remind patients that staying hydrated is crucial, especially during the warmer months, and watermelon offers a tasty alternative to plain water. Plus, it’s rich in citrulline, an amino acid that may help with blood flow and muscle soreness—something athletes and active folks benefit from.
At the Horton Farmers’ Market, local vendors bring in some of the best watermelons I’ve ever tasted. And while I love slicing one up and enjoying it as-is, there are plenty of other ways to include watermelon into your summer routine.
Watermelon Juice
My sister Diane is a pharmacist whose recommendation for patients looking to cut back on sugary drinks is homemade watermelon juice. It’s naturally sweet, and you can keep it simple or garnish it with lime, mint, or even strawberries.
Watermelon in Salads
Here’s a combo for light, nutritious meals: watermelon, cucumber, basil, lemon zest, and feta cheese. It’s refreshing, colourful, and packed with vitamins.
Watermelon Desserts
Have you ever made watermelon ice pops? They are easy and fun to prepare with your kids and a healthier alternative to store-bought frozen treats.
Whether you’re grabbing a slice at the market or blending it into a smoothie, watermelon is more than just a tasty fruit—it’s a smart choice for your health that will help you feel better.
