Peter playing a game on his phone

Cards on the table or playing games on my phone 😀 I enjoy games, they entertain and relax me.

For adults over 55, engaging in challenging phone games (e.g. Sudoku, crosswords, card games) isn’t just fun — evidence suggests it can support cognitive health and overall well-being. In fact, regular participation in mentally stimulating activities may help maintain memory, attention, reasoning skills, and other aspects of cognitive function as we age.

According to savie.ca, a survey of adults 55+ found that many regularly play digital games and report improvements in cognitive skills like problem-solving, memory, and attention. Intermediate players reported greater benefits, suggesting that consistent engagement can boost mental agility. Another Canadian study involving 590 seniors highlighted that many participants believe they receive cognitive and social benefits from playing digital games, including those played on phones.

Phone games challenge the mind by requiring players to plan, focus, and solve problems — activities linked with enhanced attention and reasoning. For example, number puzzles like Sudoku can improve pattern recognition and logical thinking, while regular engagement has been associated with cognitive performance more typical of younger adults.

Beyond cognition, playing games on a smartphone can also support emotional well-being. Many older adults report greater enjoyment, a sense of accomplishment, and opportunities for social interaction when they play games with friends or in online communities.

While no activity alone prevents cognitive decline, incorporating phone games into a balanced lifestyle — along with physical exercise, healthy eating, and good sleep — can contribute positively to healthy aging.
