A male swimming with an ostomy

An ostomy doesn’t have to limit your summer. Here’s how to stay cool, active, and comfortable.

Stay Hydrated – Drink water regularly.
If you have an ileostomy, increased fluids are even more important during hot weather or after physical activity.

Protect Your Skin – Heat and sweat can cause your flange (barrier) to start breaking down quicker than usual. Apply skin prep products to improve adherence, check your seal daily, and use extended-wear appliances or barrier strips for extra security.

Swim with Confidence – Yes, you can swim with an ostomy.
Most pouches are water-resistant.
Wear what feels right—high-waisted swimsuits, wraps, or pouch covers. Barrier rings or belts can add peace of mind in the water.

Always Be Prepared – Pack a full change kit when going out.
Include a pouch, flange, wipes, and disposal bags so you’re ready for anything.

Your ostomy doesn’t define your summer. With a few smart habits, you can enjoy every moment.
