Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are among the most widespread and costly health concerns worldwide. MSDs are conditions that affect muscles, bones, joints, and connective tissues. Approximately 24.5% of MSDs affect senior citizens, which means over 75% of these disorders are reported by individuals under 65. Musculoskeletal diseases increase with age and are the fourth largest contributor to the disease burden in older adults. MSDs significantly affect a patient’s health-related quality of life.
Preventing musculoskeletal injuries is crucial for overall health. Key strategies include:
- using ergonomically designed workstations to promote good posture and reduce strain
- regular physical activity — incorporating strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular exercises — to keep one’s muscles and joints strong.
The timing of physiotherapy treatment impacts the outcome of musculoskeletal injury. According to Campbell et al (2022), early intervention expedites recovery following MSDs and benefits mental health and promotes overall well-being. It may reduce the need for more invasive, costly and time-consuming healthcare interventions. Delay in reporting injuries and receiving medical care is associated with increased duration of temporary disability and healthcare cost (Besen et al., 2016).
Good News! By prioritizing early intervention and adopting preventive measures, those who are affected by MSD can significantly reduce the impact of musculoskeletal disorders and enhance their quality of life.
