When I was growing up, my Mom rarely cooked fish. And when she did, it was fish sticks. Luckily, I discovered different types of fish and try to consume at least one of them every week.

So, I decided to research the healthiest Ontario fish.

According to a Health Canada report, between 2019 and 2024, for the species and sizes studied, mercury levels in fish tissues occasionally surpassed their guidelines. Additionally, levels of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) contributed to contamination.

Of all Ontario fish, yellow perch stands out as the best choice. It has the lowest levels of contamination and is packed with health benefits that include:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids
  • Vitamin B12
  • Selenium

Not only is yellow perch good for you, but it also tastes delicious! Enjoy!
