I have lots of fond memories from my childhood. For example, in August, when coming home from vacations, my Dad would drive through Leamington to pick up freestone peaches (the ones that don’t stick to the pit). Either he or my Mom would cut them up into a bowl and we’d all enjoy them.

August 27 is National Peach Day. This tasty fruit is not only sweet and refreshing but also packed with powerful nutrients and antioxidants that support overall health. According to healthline.com, a medium peach contains vitamins A and C, potassium, fiber, and beneficial plant compounds, all of which help protect the body against oxidative damage and aging. Fresh peaches, in particular, provide higher antioxidant levels than canned varieties.

One of my favourite benefits of peaches is improved digestion. Their mix of soluble and insoluble fiber supports regular bowel movements, feeds healthy gut bacteria, and may reduce inflammation linked to digestive disorders such as IBS and Crohn’s disease. Peach flowers, long used in traditional medicine, also show promise in easing constipation.

Peaches may also promote heart health by lowering cholesterol, blood pressure, and triglycerides, while their compounds may support cholesterol excretion. For skin, peach extracts can enhance moisture retention and protect against UV damage, helping maintain healthy texture and appearance.

Beyond this, research suggests peaches may reduce the risk of certain cancers, particularly breast and colon, thanks to their polyphenols and carotenoids. They may also lessen allergy symptoms, strengthen immunity, protect against toxins, and even help regulate blood sugar.

Versatile and delicious, peaches are a nutrient-dense fruit that will help you feel better.
