Ever since the pandemic, we haven’t traveled much. Whether we go away this summer or not, I’m making a date with my family to go fishing. It isn’t just a beloved Canadian tradition — for those who are hooked on health, fishing is the reel deal! Beyond the thrill of the catch and the beauty of nature, a day by the water can boost your body and mind.

Mental perks? Plenty. Fishing encourages focus and mindfulness, pulling your attention away from daily stressors — much like meditation. It can reduce anxiety, lift your mood, and even help manage PTSD. And those peaceful vibes stick around, with lowered stress hormone levels lasting up to three weeks after your trip.

Problem-solving is part of the fun. From switching bait to finding the right spot, fishing keeps your brain sharp and your thinking flexible.

Physically, it’s more of a workout than you’d expect. Whether you’re walking to a new location, casting a line, or reeling in a fighter, you’re getting low-impact exercise that engages your entire body. Plus, time in the sun means a healthy dose of Vitamin D — great for your immune system and mood.

And if you cook your catch? Even better. Fish are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, known to boost heart health and even improve eyesight.

For kids, fishing builds patience, motor skills, and focus — especially helpful for those with ADHD. It also gets them off screens and into nature, which is proven to boost creativity and calm.
