If you are one of approximately half a million Ontarians who have eczema, falling asleep at night can be a challenge. When your body winds down for bed, this can cause itching, irritation, and dry skin to ramp up. Thankfully, there are things you can do in your bedtime routine to alleviate eczema flares.
Before going to bed, take a shower. Not only is it relaxing, but it also washes off irritants, allergens, and bacteria. Avoid using hot water and taking long showers, as this will make your eczema worse. Instead, take quick showers with lukewarm water.
After you finish showering, moisturize. Your body can lose moisture overnight, so using a moisturizer after showering will help to lock in water and keep your skin healthy. Moisturizing also helps to reduce dry skin and overnight flaking that occurs when you toss and turn in your sleep.
Regular showering and moisturizing are just two ways you can help reduce eczema flare-ups at night. Lifestyle changes such as decluttering your room and washing clothes and bedsheets with fragrance-free and dye-free laundry detergent can also help. If your eczema is still acting up, talk to your pharmacist for recommendations on treatments.
