World Senior Citizen’s Day is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the seniors in our lives. At Yurek, we are often one of the healthcare providers seniors visit regularly, putting our staff in a unique position to notice changes and encourage conversations about mental well-being.

There are many factors that increase older adults’ likelihood of experiencing mental health challenges. These include long-term illnesses, loss of mobility, loss of loved ones, poor diets, or side effects from medications.

Common symptoms that an older person is struggling with mental illness include:

  • Extreme fatigue or loss of energy
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Withdrawing from activities they once enjoyed
  • Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or helplessness
  • Suicidal thoughts

There are several reasons older adults may not feel comfortable reaching out for help with their mental health. Stigma around mental health can make it harder to open up to someone. Some symptoms can also be mistaken for other conditions.

Coping with one’s mental health looks different for everyone. Some people benefit from doing activities they enjoy, while others might prefer trying something new. Exercising and staying connected with people are other great ways to help improve one’s mood.

It’s never too late to look after your mental health. If you’re an older adult and struggling with mental health, talk to someone or see a healthcare provider for more information.
